Turmeric is a bright yellow spice mostly known for its high amount of antioxidants, nutrients, and powerful anti-inflammatory properties — all medicinal actions for cancer prevention. Ginger root also is known for its anti-inflammatory properties as well as the benefits for aiding nausea, intestinal distress and promoting immunity. Be careful when cooking with fresh turmeric root as it can stain your hands and clothes yellow! While making the Golden Cow, I always wear latex gloves to prevent my hands from looking jaundice-y. Also, note-to-self — don’t wear white Lululemon (oops).

Part I:

5 oz. fresh ginger root, grated

4 oz. fresh turmeric root, grated

2 c. almond milk, unsweet

  1. Peel off the skin of the roots by using a potato peeler or a spoon!
  2. Weigh the roots on a food scale or just estimate amount the best you can (there should be about one open handful of each root peeled).
  3. Chop peeled roots into tiny pieces or use a grater. 
  4. Place roots and almond milk into a blender or food processor to puree
  5. Strain int a medium-sized bowl (use a spoon or spatula to help press ingredients against the strainer to extract the liquid)
  6. Make sure to keep the liquid separate from the paste.
    • For the left over paste (makes around 9.5 oz), I place it into the freezer to use for the next time I want to make the golden cow. Let the paste thaw and blend it with more almond milk to get your base! Another use for the leftover paste is to use it in a smoothie!
Part II:

16 oz. nonfat milk (cow’s milk because it has 7x more protein and1/2 the fat compared to most nut milks!)

1 teaspoon pure maple syrup

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla bean paste

1/2 teaspoon cracked black pepper (or more as desired)

  1. Place all ingredients into blender & mix for just 30 seconds
  2. Combine both liquids into a big glass pitcher 
  3. Refrigerate for at least 30 mins to let the flavors steep and become more potent
  4. Pour milk over a cup of ice, top with freshly cracked black pepper to taste & enjoy!

P.S. the best reason to add black pepper to this drink is because it enhances the bioavailability of curcumin (the main component in turmeric). So basically, our body gets more benefit out of the consumption of turmeric by pairing it up with black pepper. YAY for synergism!

TIPS

You can find ginger root at almost any market now-a-days.

Turmeric root may be harder to find – I get mine from sprouts (pic below), but I have also seen turmeric root at Whole Foods.

Picnics call for plastic wine glasses with a grey screw… it is the only exception. // But truly this Grey Screw 🍊 💕 [mix between a greyhound + a screwdriver] is the best. Super refreshing adult beverage right here. 🙌🏼 
To make:
Squeeze four grapefruits over a fine mesh strainer into a bowl • pour a splash of OJ (I used Tropicana 50) • liberally add vodka (whichever brand you like, Titos is good for those who have a gluten intolerance) • refrigerate • add ice • drink • that’s all. 😜

The RDA (recommended dietary allowance) states women are allowed 1 drink per day while men get 2 drinks per day.

DRINK RESPONSIBLY, obviously.

Created this babe [Recharge] after my morning workout & to say I’m slightly obsessed is an understatement. 🙃😏

This Recharge smoothie is just what I needed for a productive day ahead:

  • 1 scoop Javapro protein powder [espresso]
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk 🍼
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats (I didn’t quite fill it to the top)
  • 1 frozen small banana 🍌
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract [@simplyorganicfoods]
  • Dash of iced black coffee [bux] ☕️
  • Handful of ice

Blend until smoothie 😋 my ninja blender is the 💣
Top with a small sprinkle of cacao nibs
Approx Nutrition Facts: 310 calories; 3g fat; 35g carb; 20g pro; 80mg caffeine 👍🏼 🍌 💪🏼

First time ever wine tasting and it was a dreamy experience!

My dear friend Lia is getting married August 5th, 2016. For her bachelorette party, we took a trip to San Fran and Napa Valley. It was the best girls weekend, ever. One of my favorite stops was at Domaine Carneros by Taittinger in Napa Valley, CA. Instead of just wine tasting, we got the pleasure of drinking sparkling wine while getting educated! From what I can remember, I learned quite a few tips + tricks about alcohol and its delicious bubbles. 

Did you know you’re suppose to keep the metal cage on when twisting off the cork to get a better grip? I didn’t until today! Also, twist the bottle & not the cork to prevent losing the excess alcohol through the fizz (so VERY important 😉).

So what fancy champagne name is the best? Brut nature is the lowest calorie champagne. After that, there is extra brut, brut, extra dry, dry then demi sec, which is the highest in calories and typically the sweetest.

Please drink responsibly … Or don’t… As long as you get an uber (or party bus) 🙌🏼  😁

Lemon water is my favorite… 🍋 & no it’s not the magical drink you should consume every morning for weight loss. 🙄 // Here’s why:

— When people say it revs up your metabolism, they are true to a certain extent. Calories provide energy and lemons have a small amount of calories. In any form, (fat, carbs, protein) provoke a response of the gastrointestinal tract to break down those calories for a release of energy. Therefore, if a food has calories, it “boosts” your metabolism aka making it work in order to breakdown food for fuel. This is not code for weight loss. This means your body simply has to use energy to get energy from the calories in the lemon just as it would have to work to break down a bite of cake.

— Lemon water is low in calories so if anything, it does not hinder weight gain… Drinking plenty of water is a great plan for a healthy body and mind… Not a way to “shed” extra pounds.

— It tastes good. People will tell you lemon water is good for you, but really I think they should promote drinking more water in general and to replace sugar sweetened beverages!

— Water is useful for metabolism, absorbing water-soluble vitamins, and staying hydrated. Any form of water is good. If you want to add lemon for flavor, do it!
Drink lemon water for enjoyment, not weight loss. 😘
